PoE 2 Deflection Guide (Patch 0.5): How Evasion Builds Survive Endgame Bosses

category:Path Of Exile 2

Jul-03-2026     Source: MMOSO

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 makes Deflection an important defensive layer for Dexterity-based Evasion builds. While Evasion can avoid most incoming attacks, a single successful hit can still cause heavy burst damage in high-tier maps and boss encounters.

Deflection helps solve this weakness by reducing damage after an attack bypasses Evasion. This guide explains how Deflection works, how it scales with Evasion, which defenses combine well with it, and how Dexterity builds can improve their endgame survivability.

What Is Deflection & Hit Process

Deflection is a post-hit damage reduction mechanic for Dexterity builds. Evasion completely avoids attacks, but Deflection cuts damage when an enemy hit gets through your evasion.

All attacks resolve in this order: Enemy Attack → Evasion Check → Hit Land → Deflection Check → Reduced Damage

Base Damage Reduction

Deflected hits deal 40% less raw damage by default. For example, a 10,000 damage monster hit only deals 6,000 damage with Deflection active. This fixes the glass cannon flaw of pure evasion builds and prevents one-shot deaths from bad evasion rolls.

Important: Red-glow boss ultimates ignore regular defenses and most Deflection mitigation. Use manual dodge rolls to survive these deadly burst skills.

Updated Deflect Chance Formula & Hard Cap

GGG published the official formula for Deflect Chance in Patch 0.5: Deflect Chance = 150 × (1 − Attacker Accuracy ÷ (Attacker Accuracy + 0.12 × Total Deflection Rating))

  • A = Enemy’s total Accuracy
  • D = Total Deflection Rating from evasion conversion, passives and gear
  • Hard cap: 95% maximum Deflect Chance, same as Evasion. You can never hit 100%.
  • Stats to reach 95% Deflect Chance:
  1. No Blind: ~28,800 Deflection Rating
  2. With Blind: ~23,050 Deflection Rating

Automatic Evasion-to-Deflection Conversion

Evasion Rating automatically turns into Deflection Rating. You can raise this conversion rate via:

  • Passive notable Staunch Deflection
  • Unique helmets with extra conversion and Evasion
  • Reflection Support I/II: Share your Evasion-based Deflection with teammates

Anything that boosts Evasion also improves your Deflection. This includes Dexterity, high-evasion armor, Evasion mods, Jade Flasks and movement Evasion passives.

Damage Reduction Caps & Stun Immunity

  • Deflected hits deal 40% less damage by default
  • Normal hits and critical strikes have separate damage reduction caps; unique helmets can lift this limit
  • Hits that trigger Deflection do not build stun, so you won’t get perma-stunned by mobs

Blind Synergy

Blind lowers enemy Accuracy by 20%, making it easier to hit the 95% Deflect cap without perfect gear, ideal for SSF players.

Three Optimal Scaling Strategies to Maximize Deflection

1. Core Foundation: Stack Raw Evasion (First Priority)

Evasion automatically generates Deflection Rating, so maxing Evasion is the base of all Deflection builds.

Gear: High base-evasion armors for Ranger and Dex hybrid builds

Mods: % Evasion, flat Evasion, Dexterity, Evasion while moving

Passives: Dex/Evasion clusters, Staunch Deflection, movement Evasion nodes

Flasks: Jade Flask for huge Evasion boosts Patch buff: All Evasion armors get extra Evasion; more bonuses at level 80+.

2. Stability Boost: Keep Blind Active

Blind cuts enemy Accuracy, lowering the Deflection Rating needed to hit 95% Deflect Chance. Ways to keep Blind up:

  • Skills & Supports: Blind Aura, Blind on Hit, smoke skills
  • Ranger / Deadeye Ascendancy Blind passives
  • Ring & Amulet mod: Attacks Blind Enemies on Hit

3. Endgame Peak: Evasion & Deflection Uniques

Special unique helmets lift Deflection damage caps and Evasion conversion rates. Hybrid chest uniques add Evasion, Life, ailment resistance and extra Deflect Chance. Ranger unique bows grant life leech when hits trigger Deflection. Use Reflection Support to share Deflection with teammates in parties.

Deflection Synergy With All PoE 2 Defensive Layers

Combo Core Effect Key Notes
Deflection + Evasion Dual-layer defense: Evasion dodges hits, Deflection reduces damage when evasion fails, greatly lowering one-shot risk The best default choice for all Dexterity builds
Deflection + Energy Shield ES absorbs leftover damage after Evasion & Deflection Chaos damage ignores ES and deals double damage; Ghost Dance nerfs in 0.5 make ES hybrid builds weaker for endgame
Deflection + Block Block fully stops blockable hits, Deflection covers unblockable damage Balanced setup: moderate Block + max Deflect Chance. Red glow boss ults can’t be blocked or softened by Deflection
Deflection + Elemental Resistances Resists cut base damage first, Deflection lowers final taken damage Resistances are mandatory; Deflection cannot replace max elemental resistances
Manual Dodge Roll Instant, no-cooldown dodge skill Only way to avoid deadly red-glow boss ultimate bursts

Fixed Deflection Limitations

1. Deflection only works for instant hit damage and ailments from that hit.

2. It offers no defense against DoT damage: Bleed, Ignite, Poison, ground corruption. Add ailment mitigation and recovery mods on your build.

3. Red-glow boss ultimates bypass most Evasion and Deflection effects.

4. Deflect Chance caps at 95% and cannot be raised to 100%.

Best Dexterity Archetypes for Deflection Builds

Ranger

Inherent high Evasion and ranged safety. Deflection fixes sudden deaths when enemies close in.

Deadeye

High mobility and projectile bonuses. Deflection provides reliable tankiness for long boss fights.

Evasion Hybrid Builds

Meta standard: High Evasion + max Deflect Chance + moderate Block + Life, perfect for T16 maps and endgame bosses. ES hybrid builds still playable but less stable after 0.5 nerfs.

Long-Term Meta Outlook

  1. Deflection will stay as a core defense for Dexterity builds in future leagues.
  2. The meta focuses on stacking pure Evasion to boost both Evasion and Deflection at once, simplifying build creation.
  3. High-stat Evasion armors, Evasion unique helmets and hit-to-Blind mods remain valuable trading/crafting items.

Deflection Usher In A New Era For Evasion Builds

Deflection has brought unprecedented consistency to traditional Evasion builds. By combining it with Block and elemental resistances, Dexterity archetypes now have a complete defensive framework capable of handling endgame content. As future leagues and updates arrive, Deflection is expected to remain a core component of most Dexterity-based builds.
