The iconic Horadric Cube from Diablo II makes its triumphant return to Sanctuary in Diablo IV with the Lord of Hatred expansion. More than just a nostalgic callback, this legendary crafting station is the centerpiece of Season 13, unlocking a new tier of gear customization and power progression through Transfiguration. Whether you’re recycling unwanted loot, upgrading rare gear to legendaries, or chasing the perfect double-Legendary amulet, the Cube is your gateway to the strongest builds in the game.
This guide breaks down every aspect of the Horadric Cube system, from basic recipes to advanced Transfiguration strategies, so you can maximize your endgame potential.

The Horadric Cube is unlocked automatically early in the Season 13 questline (around level 20–25). No rare drops, no hidden boss — just follow the main seasonal story.
Once unlocked, it becomes a permanent crafting station on your account. Unlike temporary seasonal mechanics, the Cube stays with you throughout the Lord of Hatred expansion and beyond.
In fact, you'll start seeing Cube materials dropping as early as level 20, which means you can begin experimenting with its basic recipes long before reaching the endgame.
At its core, the Cube uses recipes and rare materials to transform one or more items into something new. Two materials are central to every craft:

All Cube recipes fall into two categories: Item Transmutation (recycling and upgrading gear) and Gear Modification (altering item properties, with Transfiguration as the most powerful form).
These recipes let you recycle, upgrade, and reroll gear at every stage of progression. From preview footage, we’ve identified the following confirmed recipes:
|
Recipe Name |
Description |
|
Amalgamation |
Combines multiple copies of the same item to upgrade it. Limited to specific consumables, socketables (like gems), and dungeon keys. |
|
3-to-1 Transmutation |
Transmutes 3 equipment or Talisman items of the same type into a new random item of that category. Great for rerolling unwanted loot. |
|
Recycle Uniques |
Combines 3 copies of the same Unique equipment or Charm to create a new version of that Unique, perfect for rerolling stats on BiS items. |
|
Upgrade to Legendary |
Converts a Rare (yellow) equipment item into a random Legendary (orange) of the same type. Ideal for turning leveling loot into build pieces. |
|
Upgrade to Unique |
TBD (Unreleased in previews) |
|
Reroll Set Charm |

|
Craft Unique Charm |

While full details are pending for some recipes, the confirmed ones already offer significant flexibility for gear progression.
Beyond basic transmutations, the Cube unlocks Transfiguration—Diablo 4’s most powerful endgame crafting system. This high-risk, high-reward process applies a permanent, powerful modification to fully upgraded gear, pushing it past the limits of standard Masterworking.
Before attempting Transfiguration, you must meet three requirements:
Double-check that your gear is fully upgraded. Once Transfiguration is complete, most items become permanently unmodifiable—you’ll still be able to swap gems, but Enchanting, Masterworking, and Tempering will be disabled.
Head to the seasonal hub and interact with the Cube to open its crafting interface.
Place your item and reagents into the Cube, then click “Transfigure.” The Cube will apply a random beneficial effect, such as an item level boost or a new Greater Affix. There’s a rare chance the item remains modifiable, allowing you to Transfigure it a second time for even more power.
Tuning Prisms are the key to reducing Transfiguration’s randomness and securing the results you want. Each type serves a specific purpose:
|
Prism Type |
Function |
|
Standard Reagent |
Mandatory base material for every Transfiguration attempt, applicable to all item types. |
|
Entropic Tuning Prism |
Eliminates the risk of losing existing beneficial affixes. Guarantees the item will be permanently locked after crafting. |
|
Kalian Tuning Prism |
Specialized reagent exclusive to amulet modifications. Unlocks and rerolls the second Legendary Aspect slot. |
Based on our testing across multiple T8 Tournament runs:
While farming T8 Tournaments is the standard way to acquire these rare materials, the 1.5–2 hour drop rate and anti-fatigue caps can make the grind exhausting. If you want to skip the 10-15 hour grind and dive straight into customizing your build, you can safely buy Kalian Tuning Prisms and Primordial Dust here to fuel your next Transfiguration attempt instantly.
Amulets are the best candidates for Transfiguration, thanks to the Kalian Tuning Prism’s unique ability to add a second Legendary power. Follow this workflow to craft your ideal amulet:
Primordial Dust and Tuning Prisms are shared across all recipes, so plan your usage carefully:
A: Yes. The Horadric Cube and Transfiguration system are permanent additions to the game, so your crafted gear will remain usable after the season ends.
A: No. Once an item is locked by Transfiguration, it cannot be modified further (except for gem swaps). This makes preparation critical.
A: Kalian Prisms drop from high-tier endgame content, including Tournament 8 difficulty and Colossal Ancients fights. They are also tradable with other players.
A: Transfiguration cannot “fail,” but it may roll a suboptimal modifier. Using Entropic Prisms prevents negative outcomes, while the rare “re-rollable” result lets you try again for better stats.
The Horadric Cube and Transfiguration system mark a new era of gear customization in Diablo 4. With the right strategy, you can turn even common drops into endgame masterpieces that carry you through the toughest challenges of Season 13. By mastering the Cube’s recipes, using Tuning Prisms strategically, and planning every step of your crafting journey, you’ll build gear that stands the test of Sanctuary’s most brutal trials.
