What's missing from the plot among each Diablo series game? (Part5)

Feb-05-2024

The heroes defeated Duriel as they had with his sister Andariel, rescuing Tyrael. He revealed that during the struggle to prevent Diablo from breaking the seals, Baal had convinced Mario, a mortal under the control of a "Dark Wanderer," to remove a fragment of the Soulstone from Tal Rasha's heart, freeing him. With freedom, Baal took control of Tal Rasha's body and quickly overpowered Tyrael along with Diablo. Before being defeated, Tyrael ordered Mario to take the Soulstone to Hell and destroy it in the hellfire forge.

Meanwhile, Diablo and his brothers prepared to go to Travk's temple city on the eastern shores of Kurast to free Mephisto. Trav's was a holy place of Khanduras, but as mentioned earlier, Khanduras had been thoroughly corrupted by the demons from top to bottom.

Despite the heroes' relentless pursuit, they still couldn't catch up with the Dark Wanderer. Diablo and Baal caused the guards of Khanduras' temple to flee and kill each other, even senselessly slaughtering their own leader. Thus, Diablo and Baal arrived at the core chamber of the holy place and freed Mephisto. After three centuries, the three demon lords reunited.

In the chamber, the demon lords plotted how to reclaim Hell, exact revenge on those who imprisoned them, and most importantly, how to destroy the Worldstone (though I believe it should be to seize it). They decided to split up: Diablo enslaved many mortals and Nephalem believers to open a portal to Hell, planning to use Nephalem soldiers as vanguards to retake control of Hell; Baal chose to head north to destroy the Worldstone; while Mephisto stayed behind to delay his brothers as much as possible.

When the heroes arrived, Kurast was already occupied by demons and cultists. After fighting their way into the core chamber, they engaged Mephisto in a bloody battle. Following a fierce fight, the heroes defeated the demon lord, but they knew the battle was not over. They stepped through the portal to Hell without hesitation.

To their surprise, the portal did not lead directly to Hell but instead sent them to the former site of the Worldstonethe "Chaos Sanctuary" (also known as the Fortress of Sin). There, they dealt with the fallen angel Izual, who had betrayed his former commander Tyrael and revealed many secrets of High Heaven to Hell.

Guided by Tyrael, the heroes finally crossed this chaotic land and reached the fire rivers of Hell. They fought their way to the hellfire forge, where they defeated the armorer of Hell and seized the Hellforged Hammer.

Mephisto's Soulstone was ultimately shattered by the Hellforged Hammer, marking the end of the demon lord.

The heroes then followed the fire rivers to the Chaos Sanctuary at the end of the fire rivers, opened the five seals of the Demon Lord, and defeated Diablo, who was busy ruling Hell.

After defeating Diablo, his twisted and massive body transformed back into the visage of Prince Aidan. The heroes respectfully removed the Soulstone belonging to Diablo from his forehead and cremated his remains. With Diablo's Soulstone in hand, they walked towards the hellfire forge and destroyed the Soulstone on the Annihilation Prime. Once again, the heroes achieved victory (though it is said in Cain's Book that demons and angels cannot truly die; their death merely exiles them to the Forgotten Realms).
