Runes are among the most valuable resources in Diablo 2: Resurrected. They are used for powerful Runewords, gear upgrades, trading, and endgame character progression. However, no single farming location is ideal for every Rune.

In D2R Season 15, the best approach is to match your farming route to the Rune range you need. Countess is useful for targeted low and mid Rune farming, while Lower Kurast, Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, the Secret Cow Level, and high-level Hell areas are better suited to high-volume farming. Terror Zones also provide rotating high-level farming opportunities, with Season 15 adding further changes to Herald rewards.

This guide covers 15 reliable Rune farming spots and explains what each location is best suited for in Season 15.D2R Season 15: Best Rune Farming Spots & Routes

1. Countess – Targeted Low and Mid Rune Farming

The Countess remains one of the most useful Rune targets when you want a predictable farming route rather than relying entirely on random high-volume drops.

Her special Rune drop table has different limits by difficulty:

Normal: up to Ral

Nightmare: up to Ko

Hell: up to Ist

Her normal monster drop table is separate and can produce higher Runes, but the Countess should not be treated as a dedicated Ber, Jah, or Zod farming method.

The Tower is also useful for the Key of Terror, making Countess runs valuable beyond Runes.

Best for: Low and mid Runes, Keys, early Hell farming.

2. Lower Kurast – Super Chest Farming

Lower Kurast is one of the classic Hell farming routes for players targeting valuable Runes through Super Chests rather than monster kills.

The main advantage is consistency. Once you know the efficient hut and chest layouts, you can repeat a short route and open the relevant Super Chests before immediately starting another run.

Lower Kurast is particularly popular in offline play, where players can adjust the /players X setting to increase the effective player count. The goal is not simply to use the highest setting, but to find the setting that improves drop efficiency without making each run too slow.

Best for: High Rune farming through repeated Super Chest runs.

3. Travincal – Council Farming

Travincal is a strong Hell farming location because the Council provides a concentrated group of high-value monsters in a relatively small area.

The Council can drop Runes alongside Gold, Unique items, Set items, and other valuable gear. This makes Travincal especially effective for builds that can eliminate the Council quickly and survive their elemental and melee threats.

The shorter route also makes it easy to repeat dozens or hundreds of runs when farming through volume.

Best for: Mid–High Runes, Gold, Uniques, and Sets.

4. Chaos Sanctuary – Dense Endgame Farming

Chaos Sanctuary combines dense monster packs with one of the game's most important endgame bosses, Diablo.

Rather than relying on a single monster's special Rune table, Chaos Sanctuary gives you many eligible kills during a full clear. This makes it useful when you want to farm Runes while simultaneously collecting bases, Uniques, Sets, experience, and other endgame loot.

Fast area clearing is more important than adding unnecessary Magic Find at the expense of damage or speed.

Best for: High-volume Rune and endgame gear farming.

5. Secret Cow Level – High Monster Density

The Secret Cow Level is one of the most recognizable farming zones in D2R because of its enormous monster density.

Cows are especially valuable for builds with strong area-of-effect damage. A full clear creates a large number of eligible monster kills, giving you many opportunities to find Runes and other valuable items.

The Cow Level is also an excellent source of:

  • Socketable base items
  • Charms
  • Jewels
  • Gems
  • Other equipment

Best for: High-volume Rune farming and Base Items.

If you are targeting a specific Rune for a Runeword rather than relying entirely on random drops, you can also check the available D2R Runes at MMOSO for a more direct option.

6. Terror Zones – Rotating High-Level Farming

Terror Zones provide a rotating alternative to repeatedly farming the same fixed Hell areas. Terrorized monsters are higher level, which expands the range of valuable loot that can be obtained from the affected area.

For Rune farming, the main advantage is the combination of high-level monsters, varying zones, and additional loot opportunities rather than a simple direct Rune-drop multiplier.

Season 15 also introduced further Terror Zone and Herald changes. Blizzard increased the chance for Rare-quality and higher items from Herald Tier 3 and above, while making separate adjustments to Latent Sunder Charm drops. These changes should not be interpreted as a direct increase to High Rune drop rates.

Best for: High-level general farming, Runes, gear, Charms, and XP.

7. Terror Zone Heralds – Extra Season 15 Loot

Heralds give Terror Zone farming an additional target beyond the normal monster packs.

Heralds can begin hunting players after monsters are killed within a Terror Zone, and the chance of encountering one increases as more monsters are killed in the same Terrorized Zone. Their Tier also increases when a Herald spawns.

For Season 15, the important change for general loot is that Herald Tiers 3+ have an increased chance to drop Rare-quality and higher items. This makes Heralds useful as an additional loot opportunity during Terror Zone runs, but it does not mean that Heralds directly multiply High Rune drop rates.

Best for: Extra loot during Terror Zone farming and Rare+ item hunting.

8. Arcane Sanctuary – Ghosts and Rune Farming

Arcane Sanctuary offers a different type of Rune farming route because its Ghost-type monsters can provide useful Rune opportunities while the area also supports Key farming.

When farming for Runes, prioritize Ghost-type monsters that can be killed efficiently rather than wasting time navigating difficult sections of the map.

Arcane Sanctuary is also the location associated with the Key of Hate, making it useful for players combining Rune farming with Key runs.

Best for: Mid–High Runes, Keys, Charms, and Gems.

9. The Pit – Flexible Hell Farming

The Pit is one of the most flexible Hell farming areas because it can be used for both Runes and general endgame loot.

Its value comes from the number of eligible monsters and the variety of possible drops rather than a dedicated Rune mechanic. It is particularly attractive for builds that can clear the area quickly without needing a highly specialized farming route.

Best for: General Rune farming, Base Items, Uniques, and Sets.

10. Ancient Tunnels – Safe General Farming

Ancient Tunnels is a compact Hell farming area that can be particularly comfortable for builds that benefit from its monster composition and layout.

It is not a dedicated Rune farm like Countess or a Super Chest route like Lower Kurast. Instead, its strength is combining Rune opportunities with general high-level loot.

Short, repeatable runs make it useful when your character can clear the area efficiently.

Best for: General Rune farming, Uniques, Sets, and Base Items.

11. Worldstone Keep – Endgame Monster Farming

Worldstone Keep provides a large number of high-level monster encounters and can be combined with endgame Baal farming.

The area is more demanding than many specialized farming routes, but it provides opportunities to collect Runes while also gaining experience and searching for high-level equipment.

For Rune farming, focus on efficient monster clearing rather than spending excessive time searching every corner of the map.

Best for: High-level Runes, Endgame Gear, and XP.

12. Flayer Jungle – Extremely Dense Monster Packs

Flayer Jungle is another location where monster density is the main attraction.

The large number of relatively compact monster packs can create many drop opportunities in a short period, especially for fast AoE builds.

It is also useful for collecting Gems, Charms, Bases, and other miscellaneous loot while farming Runes.

Best for: Mid–High Rune farming, Gems, Charms, and Base Items.

13. River of Flame – Dense Hell Route

River of Flame is a practical Hell farming area with several groups of monsters and access to the Chaos Sanctuary.

Its value comes from combining Rune opportunities with general endgame drops. Builds that can move quickly through the zone can clear multiple packs without needing a complicated route.

It is also useful when you want to transition directly into Chaos Sanctuary farming.

Best for: Mid–High Runes, Base Items, Uniques, and XP.

14. Halls of Vaught – Nihlathak and General Loot

Halls of Vaught is primarily associated with Nihlathak and the Key of Destruction, but it can also be included in broader Hell farming routes.

The area provides additional monster kills while pursuing the Key, giving you opportunities to find Runes and other valuable items without making the entire run exclusively about the Rune drop table.

Best for: Key of Destruction runs and general Hell loot.

15. Hellforge – Reliable Quest Rune Reward

Hellforge is different from every other location on this list because its Rune reward comes from a quest rather than normal monster farming.

The Rune reward pool depends on difficulty:

Difficulty Hellforge Rune Range
Normal El–Amn
Nightmare Sol–Um
Hell Hel–Gul

Hellforge is therefore a useful guaranteed opportunity to collect a Rune while progressing a character through the game.

It should not be confused with repeatable Rune farming. Once the quest reward has been claimed for that character, you cannot repeatedly farm the same Hellforge for additional quest Runes.

Best for: Guaranteed quest Rune rewards during character progression.

Rune Farming by Target

Use the following table as a quick reference when choosing a farming route.

Rune Range Recommended Farming Options
El–Ral Normal Countess
Tal–Amn Countess and early progression areas
Sol–Ko Nightmare Countess
Lem–Um Hell Countess, Travincal
Mal–Ist Hell Countess, Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary
Gul–Lo Hellforge, Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, Cows
Sur–Ber Lower Kurast, Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, Cows
Jah–Cham Cows, Chaos Sanctuary, Terror Zones, dense Hell areas
Zod High-density Hell farming and suitable Terror Zone farming

The higher the Rune you are targeting, the less useful it becomes to rely on a single monster's special drop table. High Rune hunting is generally a numbers game: more efficient eligible kills and more completed runs create more opportunities over time.

Player Count and Rune Farming Efficiency

Player count affects how efficiently certain monsters can generate item drops by reducing NoDrop in applicable situations. It does not directly increase item quality, and higher player settings are not automatically better if they slow your runs too much.

For offline characters, /players X can scale the game from 1 to 8 players. A higher setting increases monster difficulty while improving the overall drop environment, so the practical choice depends on how quickly your build can clear the area.

For online games, actual players and party positioning can affect the effective player count. There is no /players X command in online play.

For Rune farming, the best setting is therefore the one that gives you a strong balance between additional drop opportunities and clear speed.

Does Magic Find Help With Rune Farming?

Magic Find is important for improving the quality of eligible equipment drops, but it does not directly turn a lower Rune into a higher Rune.

For dedicated Rune farming, clear speed, monster density, and the number of eligible drop attempts are usually more important than stacking Magic Find at the cost of killing speed.

Season 15's Magic Find-related changes specifically affect Latent Sunder Charms, including their drop behavior and minimum drop level. These changes should not be treated as a general Rune drop-rate change.

Which Farming Route Should You Use in Season 15?

Your best route depends on your character's progression and the Rune range you are targeting.

Starting Out

Use Normal and Nightmare Countess runs to build up a useful collection of lower and mid Runes. These Runes can help you complete early Runewords and improve your character before entering harder Hell content.

Early Hell

Hell Countess remains useful for targeted Rune farming, particularly when you need Runes within her special Rune range. You can then move into areas such as Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, Cows, or other dense Hell zones as your build becomes stronger.

Established Hell Farming

Once your character can clear Hell efficiently, focus on high-volume locations such as:

  • Travincal
  • Chaos Sanctuary
  • Secret Cow Level
  • The Pit
  • Terror Zones
  • Worldstone Keep

Choose the area that your build can clear consistently rather than simply selecting the area with the highest theoretical loot potential.

High Rune Hunting

For Sur, Ber, Jah, Cham, and Zod, focus on efficient repeated farming rather than expecting a single boss or location to provide a reliable direct drop.

Lower Kurast offers a specialized Super Chest route, while Travincal, Chaos Sanctuary, Cows, Terror Zones, and other dense Hell areas provide large numbers of monster drop opportunities.

How to Farm Runes More Efficiently

A few simple principles make a bigger difference than constantly changing locations:

  • Prioritize clear speed. A fast build can complete more farming attempts over the same amount of time.
  • Match the area to your build. AoE builds benefit from dense zones, while specialized builds may perform better in compact routes.
  • Use Countess for targeted low and mid Runes.
  • Use Lower Kurast when you want a dedicated Super Chest route.
  • Farm Travincal, Chaos, Cows, and dense Hell areas for volume.
  • Run Hellforge quests on new characters instead of ignoring the guaranteed Rune reward.
  • Use Terror Zones when the active area suits your build and you want additional high-level loot opportunities.
  • Do not sacrifice clear speed just to stack more Magic Find or increase player settings.

The most effective Rune farming strategy is usually not one location used forever. Rotate between targeted farming and high-volume farming based on what your character needs at that stage of progression.

Start Farming the Right D2R Runes

Whether you need a specific mid Rune for a Runeword or are farming for high-value Runes such as Ber, Jah, or Zod, the right location depends on your build, target, and clear speed.

Choose a route that you can repeat efficiently, focus on consistent drop opportunities, and make the most of Hell farming, Super Chests, Terror Zones, and quest rewards throughout D2R Season 15.

For players who want to spend less time farming for specific gear and Runeword materials, MMOSO also offers a range of D2R items and Runes for faster character progression.
