Path of Exile 3.29: Why Scion's Luminary Ascendancy Turns Mercenaries Into a Second Character to Gear

Path of Exile 3.29 makes Mercenaries more than temporary companions, and the new Luminary Ascendancy pushes the system further. With permanent Mercenaries, specialized equipment, and Link Skills, Luminary lets you make a Mercenary part of your character's long-term progression.

PoE 3.29 Luminary Guide: Build Around Your Mercenary

What Does Luminary Actually Unlock?

The core of Luminary is the Noble Blood Ascendancy notable, which allows you to hire a Mercenary permanently.

A Luminary can maintain up to three permanent Mercenaries, although only one can accompany you in combat at a time. The others remain in reserve, giving you different companions to choose from as your Build develops.

Several Ascendancy nodes are built around the permanent Mercenary system:

  • Noble Blood — unlocks permanent Mercenary hiring.
  • Legendary Arms — allows Unique Weapons, Shields, and Quivers.
  • Legendary Item — expands access to additional Unique equipment slots.
  • Loyal Bodyguard — lets the Mercenary help absorb incoming damage.
  • Oath of Fealty — improves the Link Skill relationship between Scion and Mercenary.
  • Golden Glory — scales Link effects through Light Radius.
  • Bestowed Knighthood — adds Mercenary utility through Taunt and non-Curse Aura support.

These nodes allow you to develop the Mercenary around damage, defense, or utility instead of treating it as a temporary source of extra damage.

Noble Blood Changes Mercenary Progression

Permanent Mercenaries do not simply use the same damage scaling as temporary Mercenaries.

In Patch 3.29.1, GGG changed the damage penalty for permanent Mercenaries so that it scales gradually with character level. There is no penalty before level 45, while the maximum penalty is reached at level 83. The patch also adjusted the damage scaling of attack-based hired Mercenaries at higher levels.

A practical progression looks like this:

  • Leveling: use temporary Mercenaries when useful.
  • Permanent hire: choose a Mercenary worth developing.
  • Gear: equip the Mercenary with suitable weapons and defensive gear.
  • Links: connect the Scion and active Mercenary with useful Link Skills.
  • Maps: continue upgrading the Mercenary as stronger equipment becomes available.

This makes permanent Mercenary progression more gradual as you move from leveling into endgame.

Legendary Arms Turns Mercenary Gear Into a Real Build

One of Luminary's biggest advantages is access to Unique equipment.

Normally, hired Mercenaries cannot equip Unique items. Legendary Arms allows them to equip Unique Weapons, Shields, and Quivers, while granting 8% more Damage for each Unique item equipped. Other Legendary nodes expand Unique equipment access to slots such as Helmets, Gloves, Boots, Belts, Rings, and Amulets. Unique Body Armour remains unavailable to permanent Mercenaries.

This opens up two main approaches.

Mercenary-Centered Damage

The Scion focuses on Links, Auras, defenses, and other support effects while the Mercenary becomes the primary source of damage.

This approach puts more emphasis on Mercenary weapons, Unique items, and offensive upgrades.

Scion-Centered Combat

The Scion remains the primary damage dealer while the Mercenary provides defensive utility, additional combat effects, or support.

This requires less investment into Mercenary damage while still taking advantage of the permanent companion system.

Link Skills Connect the Two Builds

Link Skills are another important part of Luminary.

Link Skills can target allied Mercenaries, allowing the Scion and active Mercenary to directly support each other. Link effects apply to the active combat Mercenary, while companions in reserve do not receive the same benefit.

Luminary Node Main Role
Oath of Fealty Improves the Link relationship and reduces its drawbacks
Golden Glory Uses Light Radius to improve Link effects
Loyal Bodyguard Allows the Mercenary to help absorb incoming damage
Bestowed Knighthood Adds Mercenary utility through Taunt and non-Curse Aura support

This creates a clear division of roles between the Scion and Mercenary. The Scion can focus on defense, support, and Links, while the Mercenary handles damage or additional combat utility depending on the Build.

How Luminary Changes in Maps

The permanent Mercenary system becomes more useful once you reach Maps, where stronger Mercenaries, better equipment, and dedicated Mercenary encounters become part of progression.

Patch 3.29.1 increased the appearance rate of Infamous Mercenaries, with their frequency scaling across map tiers. Mercenaries encountered in Maps can also have more support gems on their skills than earlier versions.

The Atlas provides dedicated Mercenary passives, while Trarthan Scarabs add different ways to encounter Mercenaries:

  • Trarthan Scarab — adds a Mercenary to the area.
  • Trarthan Scarab of Infamy — creates an Infamous Mercenary encounter with additional Wild Mercenaries.
  • Trarthan Scarab of Renown — makes Mercenary equipment in the area Unique.
  • Trarthan Scarab of Surprising Alliances — gives Rogue Exiles a chance to appear with Wild Mercenaries.

These mechanics make Maps useful for finding stronger companions, improving Mercenary equipment, and farming Mercenary-related rewards.

The Contract Killers Atlas notable also gives allied Mercenaries in Maps 100% more Damage against Mercenaries and Rogue Exiles, making it useful when focusing on these encounters.

Luminary in SSF

Luminary also works in Solo Self-Found, but its progression depends much more on what you find.

Without trading, you cannot immediately obtain a specific Mercenary or Unique item whenever you need one. Companion selection and equipment therefore depend on available drops and encounters.

Keeping several permanent Mercenaries can provide additional flexibility when one companion's skills or equipment does not fit your current setup.

For SSF players, this makes Mercenary progression more focused on adapting to available resources rather than following a fixed gear setup.

When Does Luminary Make Sense?

Luminary is built for players who want Mercenaries to remain part of their character throughout progression.

It can be useful if you want to:

  • Invest heavily in a Mercenary's damage.
  • Use a Mercenary for defense or utility.
  • Experiment with Unique equipment combinations.
  • Build around Link Skills.
  • Keep multiple permanent Mercenaries for different situations.
  • Take advantage of Mercenary encounters and Atlas passives in Maps.

The main trade-off is resource allocation. A Mercenary-focused setup can require additional investment in equipment, Links, and companion selection compared with a character that develops only its own gear.

Build Your Mercenary Without Repeating the Same Farm

Optimizing a permanent Mercenary can require additional Currency, Unique items, and other tradeable resources, especially when testing different equipment combinations.

If you want to spend less time repeating the same farming routes while experimenting with Luminary setups, MMOSO's Path of Exile Currency and Items can help you get the resources needed for Mercenary upgrades and Link-based Builds.

Gear the Mercenary, Not Just the Scion

Luminary turns Mercenary management into a meaningful part of Scion progression. Permanent hires, Unique equipment, and Link Skills give you more ways to build around a companion throughout the league.
