Path of Exile 2 reaches its full 1.0 release on December 11, 2026 (PST). After a long early-access period, Grinding Gear Games is delivering the complete campaign, the new Duelist class, swords as a full weapon archetype, major balance adjustments, and a shift to free-to-play.

This guide covers the confirmed timeline, free-to-play rules, early-access character handling, the Duelist and sword systems, campaign and endgame changes, balance overhauls, and practical steps for both returning and new players. Details that remain under wraps until ExileCon (early November 2026) are clearly marked.

PoE 2 1.0 Guide: Free-to-Play, Duelist, Swords & League

PoE 2 1.0 Launch Timeline & Free-to-Play Model

Path of Exile 2 version 1.0 launches on December 11, 2026 (PST) across Steam, the official standalone client, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The previous $30 early-access requirement is removed entirely. The game becomes free-to-play for everyone.

All core systems stay accessible without payment: the full campaign, Atlas endgame, currency economy, player trade, and the new challenge league. The microtransaction shop continues to offer only cosmetics and quality-of-life items (stash tabs, for example). There are no progression or power paywalls. Future leagues and patches remain free.

Early Access Character & Stash Handling

Characters created during early access move to a separate early-access Standard realm after 1.0 launches. These characters remain playable but cannot interact, trade, or group with new 1.0 characters. This keeps the fresh league and Standard economies clean.

Purchased cosmetics and quality-of-life items (including stash tabs) stay on your account and work on new characters. You do not lose prior spending.

Meet the Duelist – New Launch Class

The Duelist is the new Strength/Dexterity hybrid class arriving with 1.0. It is built around fluid, high-impact sword combat. Starting attributes are Strength 11, Dexterity 11, and Intelligence 7, matching its melee focus.

The design emphasizes stylish, aggressive play: survival is only part of the goal. All three of its Ascendancy specializations unlock at launch. Exact Ascendancy names and full skill details are expected at ExileCon.

Swords are not restricted to the Duelist. Any class can equip them, so you can run sword-based builds on Monk, Stormweaver, Druid, Oracle, or other classes by combining sword skills with existing class mechanics.

New Sword Weapon Archetype

Swords arrive as both one-handed and two-handed bases, with support for sword-and-shield setups. The update includes a large set of new sword skills covering elemental damage, blood effects, and sand-themed mechanics. Cyclone returns as a signature option.

Unique swords are expected to be especially numerous and build-defining. Many include exclusive skills or strong modifiers.

Completed Campaign & Act Structure

The main campaign is finished at 1.0. Early-access content covered Acts 1–4 plus temporary interlude zones. Those interlude areas, monsters, and bosses are reworked and moved into endgame maps.

The full story reaches Oriath and adds the remaining acts (completing a six-act structure). Final narrative details and exact act layouts stay under wraps until ExileCon.

New Challenge League & Endgame

A new challenge league launches alongside 1.0. League-specific mechanics will be revealed at ExileCon, but GGG has confirmed new endgame bosses and further polish to the existing endgame framework.

With a fresh economy at launch, many players look to jump-start their progression. If you want to get key gear and maps faster instead of pure farming, check current PoE 2 Currency stock — Divine Orbs, Chaos Orbs, and other currencies help you buy the exact items you need without grinding for days.

Major Balance & System Changes

  • Support Gem Rework: More supports gain stronger standalone value and create larger shifts when linked to active skills.
  • Unique Item Pass: Nearly every unique is reviewed so more of them act as build enablers rather than vendor fodder.
  • Passive Tree & Ascendancy Tuning: Underperforming nodes and weaker Ascendancy trees receive targeted buffs.
  • Attack Time Adjustments: Base attack time on certain skills (including some mace attacks) is rebalanced or removed for smoother scaling.
  • Trial of the Sekhema Quality-of-Life: The honor-based trial receives improvements. Players currently lose honor on hits and are ejected at zero; GGG has acknowledged the friction and is addressing it.

These changes ship together with the Duelist and swords.

Core Supporter Pack

A new Core Supporter Pack launches with 1.0. It provides cosmetics and microtransaction points only—no gameplay power. It is optional support for the development team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will early-access stash tabs carry over?

Yes. Cosmetics and quality-of-life purchases stay on your account and work on new 1.0 characters. Old early-access characters remain in their separate realm.

Can I play the new challenge league on launch day?

Yes. The league goes live with the 1.0 patch. You can create a league character as soon as servers are up.

Are swords only for melee builds?

No. Sword bases and skills support hybrid, trigger, and elemental setups across every class.

When will we see exact league mechanics?

Major reveals are scheduled for ExileCon in early November 2026, roughly one month before launch.

What happens to my early-access characters?

They move to an isolated early-access Standard realm. They stay playable but cannot trade or party with new characters.
