The launch of Diablo 4’s official expansion, Vessels of Hatred, introduces multiple innovative features to enrich both solo and group play. Among these, the brand-new Diablo 4 Mercenary system stands out as one of the most practical additions for endgame farming.
Long-time fans of the franchise will find this companion mechanic highly familiar, sharing core design concepts with the hireling systems in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3. These recruitable AI partners assist you in combat, offer diverse buffs, and greatly improve character survivability and damage output across all types of meta builds.
Core Requirement: The mercenary system is exclusive to the Vessels of Hatred expansion. Players who do not own this DLC cannot unlock or deploy mercenaries, as all mercenary features are located in Nahantu, the brand-new region.

The unlocking process depends on your campaign progress and whether you are playing a new or existing seasonal character:
For New Characters: Advance the main storyline of the Vessels of Hatred campaign. By following the campaign quests, you will automatically unlock the Mercenary’s Den and recruit your first companion, Raheir, during the early phase.
Campaign Skippers (Alts): Once any character on your account completes the Vessels of Hatred campaign, your entire account unlocks permanent mercenary privileges. All newly created characters can skip the expansion storyline, access the Mercenary’s Den at level 1, and hire companions instantly.
The Starting Quest: If you haven’t activated this feature yet, head to Kyovashad and accept the priority quest "A Fist of Fire" to kick off the unlocking process.

Diablo 4’s mercenary system allows you to deploy two independent companion roles simultaneously to stack combat advantages:
Availability: Only takes effect in Solo Play.
Mechanic: Serves as your full-time companion on the battlefield. They feature a complete skill tree, provide sustained passive buffs, and have a higher Rapport growth coefficient (level up faster).
Availability: Works in both Solo and Group Play.
Mechanic: Acts as a tactical backup unit. They only enter the battlefield temporarily when specific Opportunity Conditions are met (e.g., when you cast a specific Core skill or become Crowd Controlled).

Rapport is the unique companion leveling mechanism bound to each mercenary. Raising your Rapport rank directly unlocks more skill points for their exclusive skill tree, enhancing their combat performance.
Rapport Cap: The current maximum Rapport rank is Rank 10.
Pale Marks (Bartering): Any excess Rapport experience accumulated after reaching Rank 10 is automatically converted into Pale Marks. You can spend this exclusive currency at the Mercenary Den's Barter Vendor to trade for caches containing rare materials, legendary gear, and aspects.
How to Farm Rapport: Earn intimacy experience by deploying them as Primary or Reinforcement units while clearing dungeons, defeating elite bosses, and completing open-world events (like Helltides and Grim Favors).

Up to the current game version, Diablo 4 has launched four official mercenary characters, and each mercenary is equipped with a refined three-tier skill system covering exclusive perks, active abilities and passive abilities. The detailed rules and selection logic are as follows:
Perks belong to exclusive passive non-combat buffs, which can only take effect on hired primary mercenaries, and reinforcement mercenaries cannot activate this type of attribute bonus. Each mercenary corresponds to a fixed exclusive perk that is unlocked directly after recruitment, bringing long-term stable functional bonuses for players.
Every mercenary is configured with four active skills, split into two core active skills and two iconic active skills. A mercenary’s equipped active skills will directly determine its matching weapon type and daily combat behavior logic. For primary mercenaries, players can select one core active skill and one iconic active skill for dual collocation; for reinforcement mercenaries, only a single active skill can be equipped to adapt to situational battles.
Similar to active skills, the passive system also contains four options, including two core passives and two iconic passives. These passive effects cover two types of mechanisms: attribute buffs for the player’s character and debuff restraints against enemy units. For primary mercenaries, you can match one core passive skill and one iconic passive skill to further amplify build advantages.
Perk (Passive Buff): Automatically activates when hired as a Primary Mercenary (e.g., Raheir’s Valiance saves you from fatal damage).
Active Skills: Choose one Core Active (e.g., Shield Charge) and follow its branch to select supporting passives.
Iconic Skills: Select one ultimate-tier Iconic Skill (e.g., Bastion for massive damage reduction) and allocate points into its final passive node to complete the setup.
