Diablo 4 Horadric Gems Guide: Farming and Crafting

Horadric Gems are valuable Endgame upgrades in Diablo 4, providing stronger bonuses than lower-tier gems. Season 15 changed several gem crafting costs and reward sources, making some older farming methods less useful than they were before.

This guide covers how the current gem system works, where to farm Royal Gems, how Gem Caches have changed, and how to prioritize your gem upgrades.

How Horadric Gems Work

Horadric Gems are not obtained directly as finished items. Instead, they are upgraded through several gem tiers.

The basic progression is:

Royal Gem → Grand Gem → Horadric Gem → Flawless Horadric Gem

You can combine matching gems through the appropriate crafting system to reach higher tiers. Since each upgrade requires multiple gems from the previous tier, building a complete high-tier gem setup requires a significant amount of materials.

Horadric Gem Crafting Costs

Season 15 reduced the Forgotten Soul cost for the first two high-tier gem crafting stages.

The current costs are:

• Royal Gem: 10 Forgotten Souls
• Grand Gem: 50 Forgotten Souls

Previously, these costs were 30 and 300 Forgotten Souls respectively, so upgrading Royal and Grand Gems now requires significantly fewer Forgotten Souls.

If you are preparing high-tier gems for multiple gear slots, this change can save a considerable amount of materials.

Best Ways to Farm Gems

The old Seer's Reach farming method should no longer be treated as the main way to farm gems. Its previous Royal Gem farming behavior was changed, so returning players should make use of other available gem sources.

One option that has received attention from the current community is World Stone Keep. The route requires Torment IV or higher, and completing its Ancient encounters can provide Royal Gems. The dungeon can then be reset and run again.

This method comes from current player testing rather than an officially published Blizzard drop-rate table, so the exact rewards may change with future updates.

For players already running Endgame activities, it can also be more efficient to collect gem-related rewards naturally while progressing instead of stopping specifically to farm lower-tier materials.

Gem Caches

Season 15 made significant changes to Gem Caches.

Gem Fragment rewards were approximately doubled, while the gem reward was also changed. Gem Caches now provide a Royal or Grand Gem depending on difficulty, rather than a Flawless Gem.

This makes Gem Caches more useful as part of normal Endgame progression, especially when you are already running activities that provide them.

How to Upgrade Your Gems

Once you have enough matching gems, upgrade them progressively instead of trying to collect the final tier immediately.

A simple progression is:

1. Farm Royal Gems and Gem Fragments.
2. Craft matching Royal Gems into Grand Gems.
3. Continue combining matching gems into higher tiers.
4. Work toward your first Horadric Gem.
5. Upgrade it to a Flawless Horadric Gem when you have enough materials.

Since each stage requires multiple matching gems, it is generally better to finish the gem that matters most to your current build before spreading resources across several unfinished gems.

Which Gem Should You Upgrade First?

Prioritize the gem that provides the most useful benefit for your main build and the gear slot you are currently optimizing.

You do not need to create every possible gem immediately. If one gem provides a meaningful improvement to your main setup, completing that upgrade first gives you a more direct benefit than spreading the same resources across multiple unfinished gems.

Once your main gem is finished, you can gradually work on the remaining gear slots.

Common Horadric Gem Mistakes

Keep these mistakes in mind when farming and upgrading gems:

• Continuing to rely on the old Seer's Reach farming route.
• Spending all your Forgotten Souls before checking the current crafting costs.
• Upgrading several gems at once instead of finishing your main priority.
• Ignoring the improved Gem Cache rewards from Season 15.
• Farming only Gem Fragments without using available sources of Royal Gems.
• Confusing Season 15 Soul Splinters with the regular gear gem system.

A More Efficient Gem Farming Order

For most Endgame characters, a simple progression works well:

Farm Royal Gems → Craft higher tiers → Finish your main gem → Upgrade additional slots

If you specifically need Royal Gems and can clear the relevant encounters quickly, World Stone Keep can be used as a targeted farming option. At the same time, continue collecting Gem Caches and other gem-related rewards through normal Endgame progression rather than relying on a single farming method.

Build Your Gem Setup Around Your Main Gear

Season 15 reduced the crafting costs for Royal and Grand Gems, while Gem Caches also became more useful as a source of gem materials and higher-tier gems.

The most efficient approach is to focus your resources on the gems that directly support your current build. Once those core upgrades are complete, continue farming materials and gradually finish your remaining Horadric and Flawless Horadric Gems.
