D2R Season 15 Socket Guide: How to Get the Right Sockets with Larzuk and the Horadric Cube

Sockets are essential for many Diablo 2 Resurrected runewords, but getting the right number is not always straightforward. Larzuk's quest reward gives eligible items a predictable socket count, while the Horadric Cube offers a random result.

The right method depends on the item's quality, base type, item level, and the runeword you want to make. Understanding these rules can help you avoid wasting a valuable base or one of your limited quest rewards.

D2R Season 15: Larzuk Socket Quest and Cube Recipes

Larzuk vs. Horadric Cube: Key Differences

Feature Larzuk's Socket Quest Horadric Cube
Socket result Maximum allowed for eligible low-quality, normal, or superior items Random result, capped by the item's maximum
Normal-quality items Eligible Eligible
Superior items Eligible Not eligible for standard socket recipes
Low-quality items Eligible Not eligible for standard socket recipes
Magic items One or two sockets at random Not eligible for standard socket recipes
Rare, set, unique, and crafted items One socket Not eligible for standard socket recipes
Ethereal items Eligible if the item can have sockets Eligible if normal quality and unsocketed
Main advantage Predictable result Chance to get fewer sockets than Larzuk would provide
Main drawback May add more sockets than a runeword requires May produce the wrong socket count

The key rule: Use Larzuk when you need the maximum allowed socket count and that number matches your runeword. Consider the Cube when you need fewer sockets and are willing to accept a random result.

How Larzuk's Socket Quest Works

Larzuk's socket reward comes from the Siege on Harrogath quest in Act V. Each character can earn the reward once per difficulty, giving up to three rewards across Normal, Nightmare, and Hell.

For low-quality, normal-quality, and superior items, Larzuk adds the maximum number of sockets allowed by the item's base type and item level. The difficulty in which you complete the quest does not change the result.

Other item qualities follow different rules:

  • Magic items: Receive one or two sockets at random, subject to the item's socket limit.

  • Rare, set, unique, and crafted items: Receive one socket.

  • Low-quality, normal, and superior items: Receive the maximum number allowed by the item's base type and item level.

Item level is especially important. It is determined by the item's origin and can limit the maximum number of sockets, even when the base type supports more. Character level does not determine Larzuk's result.

For example, a Crystal Sword with an item level between 26 and 40 is capped at four sockets, while one with an item level of 41 or higher can reach six. Larzuk uses the applicable cap rather than automatically granting the base's highest possible socket count at every item level.

Horadric Cube Socket Recipes

The four standard socket recipes require an eligible, unsocketed normal-quality item. Superior and low-quality items cannot be used with these recipes, but ethereal normal-quality bases are eligible.

Item Type Recipe
Weapon Ral Rune + Amn Rune + Perfect Amethyst + Normal Weapon
Body Armor Tal Rune + Thul Rune + Perfect Topaz + Normal Body Armor
Helm Ral Rune + Thul Rune + Perfect Sapphire + Normal Helm
Shield Tal Rune + Amn Rune + Perfect Ruby + Normal Shield

Place the ingredients and the base in the Horadric Cube, then select Transmute. The recipe cannot reroll an item that already has sockets, so verify the base before using your runes and perfect gem.

How the Socket Odds Work

All four standard socket recipes use an internal random roll from one to six. The result is then capped at the maximum number of sockets allowed for that base and item level.

This means the odds depend on the base's actual socket limit:

Maximum Allowed Sockets Chance of Maximum Sockets
2 5/6 (83.3%)
3 4/6 (66.7%)
4 3/6 (50%)
5 2/6 (33.3%)
6 1/6 (16.7%)

These probabilities assume the listed maximum is the item's actual socket cap. Every lower socket count has a 1-in-6 chance; any roll above the cap becomes the maximum.

For example, a base capped at four sockets has a 50% chance of receiving four sockets. A base capped at three has a 66.7% chance of receiving three. Choosing the right base can therefore matter as much as choosing the recipe.

Example: Getting a 4-Socket Crystal Sword for Spirit

A four-socket Crystal Sword is a popular early-game base for the Spirit runeword. A Crystal Sword from the Normal Cow Level is a common choice because its item level is normally within the range that allows Larzuk to add four sockets.

However, Crystal Swords from other areas may have different item levels and socket limits. A higher-level Crystal Sword can receive six sockets from Larzuk, making it unsuitable for Spirit's four-socket requirement.

If you have an eligible, unsocketed normal-quality Crystal Sword capped at four sockets, the weapon Cube recipe offers another option. Its internal roll is 1–6, but results above the base's cap become four sockets. The chance of getting four sockets is therefore 50%.

For a base capped at four, the choice is straightforward:

Use Larzuk when you want a guaranteed four-socket result.

Use the Cube when you want to preserve the quest reward and accept a 50% chance of getting four sockets.

Before socketing any base, confirm its item level and the exact socket requirement of your intended runeword.

When Should You Save Larzuk's Reward?

Larzuk is particularly valuable when you have a desirable base that needs its maximum socket count. This includes superior bases that cannot use the standard Cube socket recipes.

Consider using Larzuk when:

You have a valuable superior base that needs its maximum sockets.

You have confirmed that the base's item level allows the exact socket count you need.

A failed Cube roll would waste a rare or difficult-to-replace base.

You want a predictable result rather than gambling on socket count.

The Cube is worth considering when:

You need fewer sockets than the base's maximum.

The item is normal quality and has no existing sockets.

You can afford to risk the required runes and perfect gem.

The base has favorable odds for the socket count you want.

For instance, if a base can receive six sockets but your runeword requires five, Larzuk would give you too many sockets. The Cube provides a chance to get five, but the result is not guaranteed.

Common Socketing Mistakes

  • Ignoring item level: The base's item level can limit its socket count, regardless of its inherent maximum.
  • Using the Cube on a superior base: Standard socket recipes do not work on superior items.
  • Assuming every base has the same odds: The probability of getting the maximum depends on the base's socket cap.
  • Ignoring runeword requirements: Both the item type and exact socket count must match the runeword.
  • Trying to reroll existing sockets: Neither Larzuk nor the standard Cube socket recipes can change the socket count of an already-socketed item.

Choosing the Right Socketing Method

If you need the maximum number of sockets and have confirmed that it matches your runeword, Larzuk is the reliable choice. If you need fewer sockets, the Cube can be worth the gamble, provided the base is eligible and its odds are acceptable.

The most important step is to check the base's item level, maximum socket count, and runeword requirements before spending your quest reward or crafting materials.
