With the launch of Diablo 2: Resurrected Season 13 – Reign of the Warlock(ROTW), a brand-new endgame challenge awaits you: the Colossal Ancients. This is far more than a simple upgrade to the three Barbarian ancients you faced in Act V. It's a mechanically intense, brutally difficult Uber boss fight that will push your build to its absolute limit. Defeating them rewards you with some of the most powerful unique jewels in the game.
This guide will walk you through everything you need to know—from unlocking the encounter to mastering each of the three bosses.

The Colossal Ancients, also referred to by players as the Uber Ancients, are the new pinnacle boss encounter introduced in the Reign of the Warlock DLC. They are an upgraded version of the classic "Ancients" quest from Act V, but the battle takes place in a new zone: the Colossal Summit.
Instead of a simple test of leveling, this is a true gear and skill check. Equipping the right gear will yield twice the result with half the effort. You'll face all three Ancients simultaneously, each with massive health pools and powerful elemental immunities:
| Name | Element | Health (Approx.) | Key Threats | Immunity |
| Talic | Fire | 6.7 million | Whirlwind, Volcano, Fire Tornadoes | Fire |
| Korlic | Cold | 6.7 million | Leap Attack, Ice Cracks, Blizzard | Cold |
| Madawc | Lightning | 6.7 million | Throwing, Charged Bolts, Thunder Storm | Lightning |
On top of their massive health and immunities, each Ancient enchants their weapon at the start of the fight, significantly boosting their respective elemental damage. They also radiate a Conviction Aura that reduces your resistances by up to 100 points. To make matters worse, each Ancient has two rage phases (at 50% and 25% HP), plus an additional rage trigger whenever one of their brothers falls.
Before you can challenge them, you'll need to gather five unique statues dropped by Act bosses while they are in Terror Zones.
On Hell difficulty, each Act boss has a chance to drop a specific statue when defeated within a Terror Zone:
- Andariel (Act I) → Talic's Anguish
- Duriel (Act II) → Korlic's Pain
- Mephisto (Act III) → Madawc's Ire
- Diablo (Act IV) → Bul-Kathos' Nightmare
- Baal (Act V) → Worusk's End
Pro Tip: Terror Zones rotate every 30 minutes. To farm efficiently, use Worldstone Shards (dropped by monsters inside Terror Zones) to turn an entire Act into a Terror Zone for a limited time. This gives you ample time to repeatedly farm the Act boss without waiting for rotations.

Once you have all five statues, head to Hell difficulty Act V. Place the five statues into the Horadric Cube and transmute them. A red portal to the Colossal Summit will open. Before stepping through, make sure you are fully prepared—there's no going back.
After entering the Colossal Summit, you'll find a Heavenly Shrine in the center. Activate any buffs you need, then click the shrine to begin the encounter.
- Life Tap: This is essential for any melee character. If you're not a Necromancer, buy a wand with Life Tap charges from Jamella in Act V. Cast it on the Ancients to keep your health topped off.
- Resistance Check: Stack your resistances as high as possible, especially for the elemental type of the Ancient you plan to kill last. For Korlic, chug a few Thawing Potions before the fight—they grant +50 cold resistance and +10 max cold resist for 30 seconds, and the effect stacks.
- Focus Fire: This is the key to victory. Focus all your damage on one Ancient at a time. Killing them one by one is far safer than spreading damage, as each death triggers a rage phase for the survivors.
- Use the Pillars: The arena contains several stone pillars. Use them to break line of sight against Madawc's ranged attacks or to dodge Korlic's Leap.
- Your Mercenary Matters: A well-geared mercenary can make or break this fight. A mercenary wielding an Infinity polearm provides Conviction aura, which reduces enemy resistances and armor—crucial for breaking immunities.
Talic's main threat is his Whirlwind. In his rage phases, Whirlwind spawns Fire Tornadoes that linger on the ground. At lower health, these tornadoes are also accompanied by Volcanoes.
- Strategy: Kite him during Whirlwind. When he enters rage phases, the ground becomes extremely dangerous—constantly reposition to avoid Fire Tornadoes and Volcano eruptions. High fire resistance is non-negotiable.
Korlic is widely considered the most dangerous of the three. His Leap Attack leaves behind Ice Cracks that deal heavy cold damage and slow you. When a second Ancient falls, his Leap Attack also triggers Blizzard, creating a lethal combination of ground hazards and falling ice.
- Strategy: Max out your cold resistance, ideally to 85% or higher. Stack Thawing Potions before the fight. Never stand still—watch for his leap indicator and move out of the impact zone immediately. The slowing effect can be deadly if you get caught in multiple Ice Cracks.
Madawc is a ranged thrower. In his rage phases, his attacks release Charged Bolts on impact. In his final rage phase, he summons a persistent Thunder Storm that strikes you repeatedly.
- Strategy: Keep moving to avoid Charged Bolts. Thunder Storm is annoying but manageable with high lightning resistance. If you have summons or a mercenary, they can help draw some of the Thunder Storm strikes away from you.
While any fully-geared character can eventually clear this encounter, some builds have a much easier time due to their inherent mechanics:
| Build | Strengths |
| Smite Paladin | The classic boss killer. High block chance, massive defense, and guaranteed Life Tap procs make this one of the safest options. |
| Echo Strike Warlock | The new DLC class’s top build. Insane burst damage and the ability to summon demons as meat shields make this a very strong contender. |
| Lightning Javazon | Charged Strike deals absurd single-target damage. For Madawc (lightning immune), rely on your merc’s Conviction aura or the physical portion of your damage. |
| Frenzy Barbarian | Excellent mobility and attack speed. Can quickly burst down one Ancient, then kite the others with Increased Speed. Dual Grief is the gold standard here. |
| Pyromancer | The other new DLC class. High burst damage and summons provide a safe way to deal damage from range while your minions tank. |
Defeating the Colossal Ancients rewards you with a Unique Colossal Jewel. Which jewel you get depends on which Ancient you kill last. Note that you can only equip one of these jewels at a time, but their power is well worth building around.
- Kill Talic Last → Guardian's Flame (Fire damage & -enemy fire res) OR Guardian's Bile (Poison damage & -enemy poison res, chance to cast Bone Armor on striking).
- Kill Korlic Last → Protector's Frost (Cold damage & -enemy cold res) OR Protector's Stone (Physical damage & -enemy physical res).
- Kill Madawc Last → Warden's Thunder (Lightning damage & -enemy lightning res) OR Warden's Light (Magic damage & -enemy magic res).
In addition to the primary damage stats, these jewels also come with valuable secondary bonuses like bonus experience, gold find, and magic find (MF), making them a massive upgrade for any endgame character.
Good luck. May your blades stay sharp and your resistances hold high on the Colossal Summit.
