​WoW 9.2: When is the update and what's in it?

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands patch 9.2 goes live on the PTR the week of December 2, 2021. That was the first opportunity for players to try out its changes, including the new Forerunner password progression system and various balance tweaks before raid testing kicks off in the middle of this month.

 

PTR cycles typically last between 2.5 and 3 months, which is why we expect a World of Warcraft 9.2 release date sometime between mid-February and early March 2022. WOW 9.2: Update date announced

The second major content update, 9.2, was announced in November 2021 and promises to be a turning point in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands history. Towards the end of eternity, and a stunning reset?

 

Arguably the name of the patch and its contents have left the door open to a lot of speculation. Is this the last big battle that players have to fight in Shadowlands? Will this update include hints for the next World of Warcraft expansion? If these questions are difficult to answer with certainty, then some of the tracks Blizzard has shot in the past can give us some answers.

 

Already, what can we infer from the previous two extensions? Legion and Battle for Azeroth received updates 7.3 and 8.3, respectively, and both included the final raid, the villains to take down, and the scenery for the next expansion. The rebellion of the Shadowlands? It's hard to tell, as the Jailer is the number one enemy to defeat in this expansion, which was not the case with the equivalent bosses in the previous expansion. Observations are made more complicated for the hypothetical setup of a possible next expansion, as with Shadowlands, Blizzard has moved away from the so-called Big Bad: Lord of the Void, the entity behind the creation of the Old Gods.
