Path of Exile 3.29 White Socket Guide: Chromatic Orbs, Tainted Chromatics & Crafting Bench Costs

Still rerolling six-link colors like it is 3.28? Patch 3.29 for Curse of the Allflame replaces the old chromatic grind with white sockets by default and optional color bonuses.

Any gem now fits any slot. Colored sockets are worth chasing only when +10% quality or a unique modifier pays for the orbs. Below: how Chromatic Orbs differ from Tainted Chromatics, what the Crafting Bench costs, and which gear still deserves color planning.

What Changed in the 3.29 Socket Rework

Before 3.29, socket color blocked gem placement. A red gem in a blue socket would not go in — pushing players into chromatic gambling, Vorici benches, and harvest color crafts just to activate a build.

Patch 3.29 removes that lock. Gems socket anywhere. Matching gem color to a red, green, or blue socket grants +10% quality on that gem.

New drops roll white by default. Each socket can still spawn colored proportional to attribute requirements — strength toward red, dexterity toward green, intelligence toward blue. Colored sockets are optional upside, not a requirement.

Chromatic Orbs: Attribute-Biased Color Rolls

Chromatic Orbs no longer reroll all socket colors randomly. Instead, each use guarantees at least one non-white socket, while the remaining sockets still roll according to the item's attribute requirements.

Strength items continue to favor red sockets, Dexterity items favor green, and Intelligence items favor blue. As a result, rolling difficult off-color combinations can still require multiple Chromatic Orbs or a Crafting Bench guarantee.

Higher item quality increases the chance of rolling non-white sockets, making quality upgrades worthwhile before coloring valuable gear. Chromatic Orbs are also harder to obtain in 3.29, as vendor recipes have been removed and Currency Exchange fees have increased. Save them for finished endgame gear rather than temporary leveling items.

Tainted Chromatic Orbs: Corrupted Gear, No Color Bias

Tainted Chromatic Orbs also guarantee at least one non-white socket, but they can only be used on corrupted items. Unlike regular Chromatic Orbs, the remaining sockets ignore attribute requirements, giving each socket an equal chance to become red, green, or blue.

This makes Tainted Chromatics the preferred choice for corrupted six-links and unique items that require difficult off-color combinations. While both orb types benefit from higher item quality, Tainted Chromatics stand out by removing attribute bias entirely, making off-color socket rolling much more reliable on corrupted gear.

Crafting Bench Color Guarantees

Single-socket red, green, and blue Crafting Bench crafts are gone. Patch 3.29 adds tiered guarantees:

• At least two non-white sockets — 5 Chromatic Orbs
• At least three non-white sockets — 20 Chromatic Orbs
• At least four non-white sockets — 75 Chromatic Orbs

Plan total chromatic spend before you commit a premium base. Horticrafting no longer reforges a random socket white. Heist and tailoring enchantments that forced all-blue, all-green, all-red, or white layouts left reward pools.

Vaal Orb corruption changed too. The outcome that turned a socket white is removed. Corruption can now turn a random white socket non-white — update any old vaal-for-white-socket plans.

The Omen of Trichromatism (formerly Omen of Blanching) consumes on use and guarantees at least one red, green, and blue socket when you apply a Chromatic Orb — useful for three-color support setups without raw RNG.

When Colored Sockets Still Win

Support Gem Quality on Six-Links

+10% quality on a primary support — Increased Area of Effect, Awakened Multiplier, or spell damage supports — is often worth a few chromatics once links are done. Two deliberate colors on a weapon or chest usually cover most of the gain; four colored sockets rarely justify the cost on every slot.

Unique Items That Scale by Socket Color

Triad Grip converts minion physical damage per socketed red gem, not per red socket — but layout still shapes which supports you quality-stack.

The Pariah ring scales life, mana, or energy shield per red, green, or blue socket. Coloring that ring is intentional endgame crafting.

Prismatic Eclipse, Scaeva, and other socket-count uniques shifted toward per-socket bonuses in 3.29. Divine older copies before you price them against the new modifiers.

Vorici and Syndicate Rewards

Vorici safehouse rank one adds a bench option that reforges sockets one hundred times and keeps the greatest socket count.

Higher ranks add color reforges — twenty-five attempts keeping the layout with the most non-white sockets. That is the deterministic path when you want colored layouts without burning standard chromatics on biased rolls.

Starter, Mid, and Endgame Spend

Starter through early yellow maps: ignore socket color. Socket in white slots, fix links with Jeweller's and Fusing orbs, hoard chromatics.

Mid mapping with a six-link skill: spend chromatics or a two-socket Crafting Bench craft on weapon or chest supports you will keep this week.

Endgame: three- or four-socket Crafting Bench guarantees on premium bases, Tainted Chromatics on corrupted six-links, Vorici color reforges, and divines on rebalanced uniques.
