In Patch 3.29.1, Abyss monsters barely dropped loot — chests paid the bills. Patch 3.29.2 buffed elites and reworked Abyss Scarab of Crystals; prices spiked the same week.
If you quit Abyss for strongboxes or alch-and-go maps, read on for one call: worth juicing again, or just paying more for the same loop?

Allflame tune-up, not a full Abyss rewrite. Loot weight moved toward elite rares; ordinary magic packs still whiff on the ground. Extra pit sources from your tree or scarabs now count toward pit-doubling rules, so density can climb when you already invested in abyss wheels.
For most mappers the answer is maybe — if you already clear open layouts in about six to eight minutes and crystal scarabs cost less than a third of what you sell per map in your stash log.
The patch fixes the chest-only feel from 3.29.1 for elite-heavy runs. It does not fix slow movement or ten-second packs. If that was your problem, strongboxes or alch-and-go may still win.
In practice, treat 3.29.2 as a consistency buff, not a new lottery. Players who hated clicking chests while packs dropped air usually notice smoother crystal chains and fewer dead pits. Players who never liked pit routing still will not — speed and layout choice matter more than patch number.
Run Crystals plus Multitudes on one open layout before you rebuy every scarab slot. Ten maps with a simple stash note beats copying a five-slot stream setup on patch day.
When every non-final pit guarantees a crystal, the scarab stops being a gamble on empty pits. Traders repriced it overnight; launch-week chaos per crystal can erase the margin the buff created.
In-map, each crystal makes the next Abyss wave tougher and richer. That snowball is the loop 3.29.2 wants you to ride — but only if scarab cost per map stays below what you sell before you log off.
For most players the order is simple: prove map sustain with zero or one abyss scarab, add Crystals, then Multitudes once clear speed holds. Descending or Consort belong after ten profitable maps — depth is variance, not a baseline.
Wait on bulk stacks if crystal cost per map exceeds what you sold last session. Prices usually flatten after patch-week volatility; recheck trade every few days instead of panic-buying day one.
Once market prices stabilize following the patch, map farmers do not need to sell their vital farming gear at the ultra-low launch-week prices to afford scarabs. You can easily buy PoE currency from MMOSO to maintain your scarab supply and keep your farming runs running smoothly.
Many accounts left Abyss when 3.29.1 felt like chest clicking. That only matters if 3.29.2 beats what you run today — not if a thread says abyss is back.
Rotate back when your atlas still has abyss wheels or a cheap respec, a ten-map crystal test beats your strongbox log, and Mesa-style open layouts match your clear speed. Stay on Ambush strongboxes when those scarabs stay cheap while crystal prices stay hot, or when short sessions never amortize a full juice box.
Maze tiers that eat timer before the boss altar still punish abyss lines harder than open farms. If your build only survives on linear maps, factor that into the comparison before you respec.
Hybrid alch-and-go plus one crystal on an open map is enough to test the patch. Do not wipe the tree for abyss clusters while Ambush is discounted unless the ten-map log already won.
Same play window as your usual session. Do not compare ten juiced abyss maps to three casual strongbox runs. One lucky depth or one bad maze tier should not decide a tree wipe — the ten-map average is the point.
In short, Patch 3.29.2 gives fast mappers another viable farm line — not a mandatory meta swap. Elite loot and crystal chains reduce empty pits; ordinary white packs still drop almost nothing on the ground.
