Path of Exile 2’s Trial of Chaos has been significantly reworked in the 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites update, adding room-based rewards, clearer modifiers, resumable progression, and a more focused reward pool.

These changes make failed runs less punishing and give strong builds more reasons to push deeper, making Trial of Chaos a more practical repeatable farming activity.

PoE 2 Trial of Chaos Rework 0.5.5 | Rewards & Strategy

What Changed in Trial of Chaos?

Players can now leave Trial of Chaos at any point and resume from the same room later. A reward chest also appears after every completed room, reducing the impact of dying deeper into a run.

The reward pool is now focused on Currency and Soul Cores, while Corrupted Items are no longer part of Trial of Chaos rewards.

Quick Look: 0.5.5 Changes

Before 0.5.5 Reworked in 0.5.5 Player Benefit
Full run required before leaving Leave and resume from the same room Less wasted time
No room-end reward chests Reward chest after every room Secure rewards as you progress
Broad reward outcomes Currency and Soul Cores Clearer farming target
New Ultimatum required to continue Two continuation opportunities More value from strong runs
No optional wager Double-or-nothing Currency option Extra risk for extra potential reward
Vague modifier descriptions Numerical modifier values Easier risk assessment

Trial of Chaos Now Rewards Deeper Runs

After completing a 10-Trial Inscribed Ultimatum, players can continue the same run without using another Inscribed Ultimatum. This can be done twice, with each successful continuation awarding a different Trialmaster Fragment.

Modifiers and reward quality carry over, while an optional double-or-nothing Currency wager adds another layer of risk. Strong builds can push further for greater rewards, while others can stop before the risk becomes too high.

Trial Modifiers Are Easier to Read

Trial modifiers are now easier to understand, with more tiers, lower difficulty impact, and clear numerical values. For example, Shielding Monsters now shows how much additional Energy Shield monsters gain based on their Maximum Life.

Between-room modifiers have also been adjusted. Difficulty-increasing modifiers now improve monster drop quality, creating a clearer risk-reward trade-off.

Modifier Selection Tips

  • Choose effects your build can handle consistently.
  • Avoid modifiers that directly amplify your weakest defensive or offensive mechanic.
  • Check the displayed numerical values before accepting higher tiers.
  • Compare the added danger with the improvement to monster drop quality.

Trial of Chaos Gets Area-Level Bonuses

Another important change is that Trial of Chaos now has inherent bonuses based on Area Level.

These bonuses can affect Magic and Rare Monster chances, monster Pack Size, the number of modifiers Rare Monsters can have, and the Quantity and Quality of items dropped by Bosses.

Higher-level areas can also gain the ability to drop Exceptional Items.

GGG added these bonuses partly because Atlas Passive bonuses do not apply inside Trial of Chaos, giving the activity its own progression-related reward scaling.

Bosses and Elite Monsters Are More Rewarding

The Trial has also been adjusted to make stronger enemies more worthwhile.

Significant elite monsters are now more dangerous but provide better rewards. The Uxmal, the Beastlord encounter has also received a complete arena redesign to make the fight less frustrating.

The Survive encounter has been improved as well. New waves spawn faster after all previous monsters are killed, certain waves now guarantee Rare Monsters, and killing those Rare Monsters reduces the time required to complete the encounter.

Is Trial of Chaos Worth Running?

For most players, the reworked Trial is more attractive than before.

The biggest improvement is not simply better rewards. It is that players can secure rewards room by room and leave without losing the entire run.

Resumable progression also makes the activity easier to fit into normal play sessions.

Strong builds have more reason to continue into higher-risk stages, while weaker characters can stop once the additional danger starts to outweigh the potential return.

Best Strategy for the New Trial

The safest approach is to treat Trial of Chaos as a risk-managed farming activity.

Start with modifiers that have little impact on your build. Consistent clears are more valuable than immediately choosing the highest available difficulty.

Once you understand which modifiers your character handles well, gradually increase the risk.

When Should You Continue?

Continuation runs are most attractive when your build is already clearing the current difficulty comfortably.

If the later stages are taking too long or putting your character close to death, pushing further can reduce your overall farming efficiency.

A simple rule is:

Continue when the expected reward justifies the additional risk.

Use Double-or-Nothing Carefully

The Currency wager should be treated as an optional bonus rather than a required part of the farming loop.

If your build can comfortably handle the next stage, taking the wager may be worthwhile.

If the current run is already difficult, securing your existing rewards is usually the safer choice.

Prioritize Consistent Clears

The new room rewards make consistency especially important.

Instead of focusing only on how deep you can go, track:

  • Reward gained per completed room

  • Time spent clearing each room

  • Failure rate at higher modifier tiers

If a higher difficulty causes significantly more failures without enough additional value, return to a safer tier.

Quick Start Checklist

  • Start with manageable modifiers.

  • Check numerical modifier values before accepting them.

  • Secure room rewards as you progress.

  • Continue only when clear speed and survivability remain stable.

  • Use double-or-nothing selectively.

  • Favor consistent returns over risky runs.

What Makes Trial of Chaos Different in 0.5.5?

The rework gives Trial of Chaos a clearer identity in the Forbidden Rites economy.

It is no longer simply a high-risk activity where players must commit to an entire run. Instead, it combines room rewards, resumable progression, scalable modifiers and optional risk.

The Area Level bonuses also give the Trial its own reward scaling despite Atlas Passives not applying inside the activity.

With Currency and new Soul Cores forming the core reward pool, Trial of Chaos now has a much clearer farming purpose.

Final Verdict

The 0.5.5 Trial of Chaos rework makes the activity more flexible, rewarding, and easier to manage.

For Forbidden Rites players, it is worth adding to your farming rotation if your build can clear it consistently. Start with manageable modifiers and push deeper only when the extra rewards justify the risk.
