The Duelist is a sword-specialist character only available in PoE 2's full release. You cannot play this class in Patch 0.5.5. The class supports both one-handed and two-handed swords, and each weapon choice delivers distinct gameplay perks.
Dual-wielding one-handed swords gives you quick slashes and access to parry defensive mechanics. On the flip side, heavy two-handed swords unlock devastating AoE attacks to clear large monster packs. Grinding Gear Games designed the Duelist around sword stances to make sword combat feel unique compared to other weapon types in the game.
According to PoE 2 game director Jonathan Rogers, many Duelist skills can be "readied" by holding down the skill button. This is the core principle behind Ready Stance: you hold your attack, then unleash it the moment you find a perfect opening.
Normal sword slashes are fast with moderate damage. While in Ready Stance, your slashes gain AoE power to hit multiple enemies at once. Ready Stance also has built-in skill upgrades.
Sand Scour is a key ability usable in Ready Stance. It unleashes a swirling short-range slash. Enemies heavily stunned by Sand Scour will shift you into Sand Stance. In Sand Stance, your basic attacks fire Sand Disks to deal extra damage to targets.
Perforate is another staple skill for the Duelist. Normally it fires three rapid stabs, and the final stab launches long-range piercing drills. When in Ready Stance, you can skip the first two strikes and fire the drill right away. Sand Stance further boosts Perforate: every drill you cast also spawns Sand Disks for additional damage.
Blood Stance centers on bleed-focused damage, but you need to meet specific conditions to activate it. You can trigger this stance by successfully parrying incoming attacks while dual-wielding swords.
After a successful parry, cast Bloodied Blade to enter Blood Stance. While active, your basic attacks release Blood Waves that apply bleed to enemies. You can boost bleed damage via passive tree nodes and support gems. You also have a second activation method: spend Frenzy Charges to cast Bloodied Blade and enter Blood Stance without a parry.
Once enemies are bleeding, Haemorrhage becomes extremely powerful. It creates Blood Slashes that speed up bleed-over-time damage on afflicted foes. When a bleeding target takes enough damage, use Rending Dash to deliver a lethal finishing blow.
Veteran Path of Exile players already know Cyclone, a channeled spinning melee skill. New players should note that Cyclone lets you spin while moving, dealing continuous damage to surrounding enemies. In PoE 2, Cyclone gets unique effects depending on your active stance.
If you use Cyclone in Sand Stance, your spin constantly releases Sand Disks. This turns Cyclone into a top-tier AoE clearing tool. In Blood Stance, moving through Blood Pools while spinning infuses Cyclone with blood-based damage effects.
Parry first arrived in the Dawn of the Hunt expansion. The original version required a Buckler in your off-hand and precise timing to block incoming monster hits. Waiting for enemy attacks often left you vulnerable.
The full PoE 2 release improves parry by tying it into the stance system. With a Buckler equipped, you can bash enemies in Ready Stance to get parry-like effects, without waiting for foes to strike.
The Duelist's strength comes from smart stance swapping. Switch between Ready, Sand and Blood Stances to modify your skill performance, for example using Sand Stance Cyclone for fast map clear.
This table lists every officially confirmed Duelist skill, including function and stance interactions.
| Skill Name | Core Function | Stance Interaction |

Swords are a brand-new weapon category launching with PoE 2 on December 11. Every sword type brings unique build possibilities. Some two-handed swords give ancestral boosts to buried blades from Earthrend and Rain of Steel: +30% damage and +25% area-of-effect.
The Duelist is only playable in Path of Exile 2 full release, scheduled for December 11, 2026.
The class is built around swords to unlock full stance and skill potential. Like all PoE 2 classes, you can equip other weapon types, but you will lose many of the Duelist's unique mechanics.
