In the Diablo II Resurrected version, there are many types of damage reduction attributes related to character roles, mainly including physical and magical aspects. Among them, resistance is the most common and easily improved attribute for reducing damage to characters. Character resistance mainly includes physical resistance (physical immunity) and elemental resistance (ice, fire, lightning, poison). Let's briefly introduce resistance and the maximum resistance.
The primary function of resistance is to reduce a certain percentage of corresponding damage. Enhancing the resistance of characters and mercenaries can improve their survival ability when facing this type of damage. For example, under hell difficulty, the character's ice, fire, lightning, and poison elemental resistance will suffer a -100% penalty. If there is no or very little equipment or items that can increase elemental resistance, then it is likely that the panel elemental resistance will show a negative number, resulting in taking more elemental damage.
The initial value for the character's elemental max resistance is 75 points, and the physical resistance is 50, representing the maximum value that resistance can be increased to. Additionally, elemental resistance can be increased by equipment or auras that can raise the max resistance, up to a maximum of 95, at which point the elemental damage reduction can reach up to 95%. There are quite a few pieces of equipment that can increase the max resistance, such as the unique item "Guardian Angel" and the runeword "Holy Freeze," among others.
There is a difference between monsters and characters in terms of max resistance. Both elemental and physical resistance can exceed 100, at which point they will display as immune to that attribute. For example, if a monster's fire resistance reaches 100, it will show as fire immune, and pure fire damage output will not harm it. However, other non-immune attributes (such as physical, ice, lightning, poison, magic) can still deal damage.
Completing the mission to rescue "Anya" in Act V rewards a scroll that adds +10 to elemental resistance, totaling 30 points across normal, nightmare, and hell difficulties. It is essential to complete this as early as possible, and the often-farmed "Belial" in hell difficulty also requires her to open the door. If you frequently encounter scenes with a lot of elemental damage, it is recommended to appropriately increase the character's overall resistance value. When equipment is poor, consider carrying more "talismans" that enhance resistance in the backpack.
Once a character's resistance reaches the max, any excess generally does not come into effect. However, when encountering monsters that can reduce character resistance, such as those that can cast resistance-reducing curses or have an "Aura of Conviction", the previously excess resistance above the max will become effective. This is because the reduction in resistance is subtracted from the character's total resistance value. So, even after reaching the max resistance later on, you don't need to worry about the excess resistance causing too much waste.
