If you're new to the game and want to jump into Season 8, this guide will walk you through everything from getting started, purchasing the game, choosing a class, early leveling, and more. If you find this helpful, feel free to share it with your fellow Diablo 4 players!
How to Start Playing Season 8
To play seasonal content, you must own the base game of Diablo IV. There are three editions available: Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate.
To access all seasonal content, the Standard Edition is sufficient. You can purchase Diablo IV on the following platforms:
Battle.net (PC)
PlayStation Store
Xbox Store
Steam Store
Note: A copy purchased on Battle.net cannot be transferred to Steam, and vice versa. If you want to play on a different platform, you'll need to purchase it again.
Diablo IV supports cross-play and cross-progression, so you only need to add your friends to play together—no need to rebuy the game on their platform.
Main difference: Price and discounts vary per platform.
Key distinction: Only Battle.net users can access the PTR (Public Test Realm) before major patches or new seasons. Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox players typically cannot access the PTR.
Recommended Edition: Standard Edition
The Deluxe and Ultimate editions mainly include cosmetics and the current season's Battle Pass, which you can also buy separately in-game. The Ultimate Edition includes additional perks like Platinum (premium currency), Battle Pass skips, and exclusive cosmetics. You do not need to complete the campaign to use these cosmetics—just unlock the related systems in-game (e.g., stables, wardrobe).
Many new or returning players wonder if they need to purchase the Vessel of Hatred expansion to play Season 8. The answer is no. You can fully participate in Season 8 content just by creating a Seasonal Character.
Vessel of Hatred Expansion: This is Diablo IV's first major expansion and is not required for each season. Expansions are expected once per year and add significant content, like a new class (Spiritborn), new region (Nahantu), runes, mercenaries, and more.
If you're planning to play long-term, it's worth looking into bundle deals that include the expansion, as they're usually cheaper than buying separately. The expansion is rich in features and adds value to the game.
Choosing a Class (Class Recommendations)
There are five core classes in Diablo IV, each with unique playstyles:
Barbarian: Melee brute with high burst and durability. Gear-dependent but very strong in endgame.
Rogue: Agile ranged or melee assassin. High burst damage, excels in bossing. Requires skillful play.
Sorcerer: Powerful ranged spellcaster with strong AoE and control. Fast leveling but fragile.
Druid: Versatile shapeshifter with summons and elemental spells. Weak early but scales hard into late game.
Necromancer: Minion-based or caster. Easy to play, forgiving, and beginner-friendly.
Spiritborn (New): Combines nature and spirit magic with high mobility and explosive damage. Versatile and fast-paced.
Best Classes for Beginners
We recommend starting with Necromancer or Sorcerer, especially Summoner Necro for a stress-free early game.
Necromancer: Very beginner-friendly. Summons can overpower enemies above your level. Simple rotation. Weaknesses include poor mobility and slow map clearing.
Sorcerer: Strong AoE and great mobility (Teleport + Raiment synergy). Efficient for clearing map fog and leveling up.
Early Game Progression (Leveling Strategy)
1. Create a “Seasonal Character”
Choose Seasonal Realm when creating your character to access seasonal content, powerful d4 uniques and legendary items, rewards, mechanics, and progression. Eternal Realm characters don't participate in seasonal gameplay.
If this is your first time playing, it's strongly recommended to complete the base game's main campaign. The story is excellent and essential for unlocking key systems, learning mechanics, and preparing for the endgame.
Once you've completed the campaign once, your account will unlock the “Skip Campaign” option when creating new characters, allowing you to jump straight into endgame content faster in future seasons.
If you own the Vessel of Hatred DLC, you must complete the base campaign first to access the new region Nahantu and the DLC story content.
2. Complete the Season Journey
Each season features a Season Journey, divided into chapters with rewards such as:
Mount skins
Additional stash tabs
Seasonal currencies for special mechanics (e.g., Helltides, Abyss of Hatred, etc.)
Recommended Leveling Path
Suggested Season 8 Leveling Flow:
Level 1–15: Do main quests and unlock your core skills (World Tier 1 recommended)
Level 15–50: Farm dungeons with key aspects + continue progressing campaign
Level 50–70: Unlock World Tier 3 & 4, run Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides
Level 70+: Push higher tier content, optimize gear, tackle endgame like Abyss of Hatred, Helltide Bosses, etc.
Tip: If you completed map exploration in a previous season, you can skip the campaign and go straight into leveling via dungeons and events for faster progression.
