As Path of Exile 3.28 Mirage approaches its conclusion, Grinding Gear Games has launched the limited-time Return of the Ancestors event, giving players new content to enjoy before the arrival of the 3.29 expansion. The event combines the tournament gameplay of Trial of the Ancestors with the alternate ascendancy system from Legacy of Phrecia, while introducing the new Ascendancy Tattoos system. Players can revisit a fan-favorite mechanic, experiment with new character builds, and earn exclusive event rewards throughout the three-week event.

This cross-platform event runs for three full weeks. It starts at 3 PM PDT on June 25 and concludes at 3 PM PDT on July 16. All game modes are accessible. After the event concludes, all characters and permanent equipment will be transferred to the Mirage League, while Silver Coins and event-specific tattoos will be deleted entirely. The Altar of Sacrifice feature is disabled throughout the event, and participants must create new characters to join.
The event fully restores Trial of the Ancestors, officially named Fate Trials on Chinese servers. Players collect Silver Coins while mapping to access the Karui Afterlife, where they recruit and upgrade Karui warrior squads to compete in bracket tournaments against Karui chieftains.
Warriors cover damage, tank, support and debuff roles, and victory relies on team strategy rather than high-tier equipment, so casual players with low-budget builds can farm rewards steadily. Two progression locks apply: defeat Act 5 Kitava to unlock level 130+ high-tier tournaments; clear Act 10 Kitava to claim a one-time exclusive Mystery Chest per account. Higher tournament brackets grant better drop rates for gold and rare Ascendancy Tattoos.
The event’s most distinctive rule disables all base game ascendancies and replaces them with 19 unique Phrecian variants from the early-2026 Legacy of Phrecia league. Archetypes like Blind Prophet, Daughter of Oshabi and Paladin unlock builds impossible to create in permanent leagues, making the event ideal for build creators.
The Reliquarian ascendancy has no matching Phrecian version and cannot be selected this league. This overhaul is temporary: after the event, all ascendancy points reset to standard base versions, with no lasting impact on your 3.29 characters.
Unlike basic tattoos from the original Trial of the Ancestors which only modify minor passive nodes, Ascendancy Tattoos are a brand-new reward exclusive to this flashback, capable of rewriting core ascendancy notable effects and greatly expanding build flexibility.
Mechanic restrictions:
Silver Coins and Trial tattoos are fully tradable via the public trade marketplace. Lost Karui Cargo and Voyage to Karui Harbor rewards are changed from tattoos to Runegrafts, and tournament chests now drop extra gold to boost farming income.
This event fits all player groups:
Practical reminders: Do not craft ultra-expensive endgame gear given the three-week event cycle. High-tier Ascendancy Tattoos only drop reliably from top tournament brackets, so raise your tournament rank first. Phrecian ascendancies have uneven balance, so follow mainstream build templates for smoother early progression.
This dual-mechanic flashback is not merely filler content, but a large-scale live test for GGG’s update roadmap. The studio confirmed hybrid flashback leagues combining classic old mechanics will become regular arrangements to fill gaps between major expansions.
The Ascendancy Tattoo system for rewriting ascendancy cores is under internal review for permanent core-game implementation, and Phrecian alternate ascendancies will be reused in future limited events. Even players focused on PoE2 should participate, as all exclusive cosmetic rewards are cross-game shared.
Return of the Ancestors serves as a polished bridge event between Path of Exile 3.28 and the upcoming 3.29 expansion. By combining the strategic tournament gameplay of Trial of the Ancestors, the alternate ascendancy system from Legacy of Phrecia, and the brand-new Ascendancy Tattoos mechanic, it offers far more depth than a typical limited-time event.
Once the event concludes, Grinding Gear Games is scheduled to unveil the Path of Exile 3.29 expansion during its official livestream on July 17, followed by the league launch on July 25. Until then, this is the only opportunity to experience these exclusive mechanics and earn limited-time event rewards. Whether you enjoy casual mapping, currency farming, experimenting with unique builds, or collecting exclusive cosmetics, Return of the Ancestors is well worth checking out.
